On July 19, a researcher I.D. Muhametshin gave a lecture “The Huns and their heirs” to visitors of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve. The audience became acquainted with the history of the ancient Huns who had a huge impact on the lives of many European and Asian peoples.
The ancestors of the Huns lived for centuries with the Chinese, Tibetans and other peoples. At the turn of our era, their power disintegrated under the combined blows of China and the Usuns. Part of the Xiongnu moved west, laying the foundation for the Great Migration of Peoples.
From II-III centuries A.D., the movement of the eastern tribes began to be felt by the tribes of the Volga region and the Urals. Among the tribes that moved to the northern coast of the Caspian Sea in II century AD, the majority probably consisted of the ancient Bulgarian tribes. They marked the beginning of the Turkification of the steppes and the formation of the Eurasian Turkic states. During their movement to the west, new tribes joined the Huns: Finno-Ugric, Slavic and Germanic. The evidence of their stay is the bronze cauldrons, copies of which are on display in the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization. The cauldrons and treasures that archaeologists find from France to China are an important part of the Huns’ material and spiritual heritage. At the turn of the fourth and fifth centuries, the Huns occupied the steppe zone north of the Black Sea from the Danube to the Volga and waged numerous internal and external local wars. They reached the borders of the Roman Empire and Byzantium and posed a serious threat to them.
14 people attended the lecture.
