On July 14, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve D.P. Hramov held an interactive event “The everyday life of the Volga Bulgars” for the museum’s guests.
The geographical location of the state completely predetermined its economic path. The first capital, Bolgar, stood on the waterway from the Caspian Sea to Europe. Being on the river routes ensured economic growth and active trade. The fertile lands along the rivers stimulated the development of agriculture. Agriculture and cattle breeding became the main occupations of the population. Due to the specifics of the climate, mainly cereals were grown. Large areas were sown with wheat and rye. Cattle breeding was also actively developing. Bulgar horses were considered one of the best and were actively sold to neighboring countries and to the east. The people of Bulgaria were engaged in bee keeping. Volga honey was famous both in Europe and in Asia. The economic and cultural spheres were also highly developed. The cities had sewers, baths, running water and heating. Silver was actively mined, which was sold in local markets, and coins were minted from it. Bulgar handicrafts were known in all neighboring states. The artisans were famous for their work on precious stones and metals, leather and fur processing, stone and metal carving, and pottery.
Using the example of archaeological artifacts, the participants of the event became acquainted with the history of agriculture, various crafts, as well as with the way of life of the Volga Bulgars from the 10th to the 15th centuries.
14 people attended the event.
