On June 19, D.P. Hramov, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve, held an educational event “Cities of Volga Bulgaria” for children from the “Bolgar” camp.
Volga Bulgaria can rightfully be considered a country of cities: Suvar, Bilyar, Juketau, Oshel, Alabuga, Bulgar, Kazan, Murom town… Their archaeological knowledge is different due to the unevenness of the excavations. Bilyar, according to archaeologists, can be attributed to the largest city in Europe. The area of the city was 800 hectares. Bilyar had an inner and an outer city. There was a posad outside it. The inner city was home to the tsar, Muslim clergy and wealthy merchants. There was also a stone cathedral mosque. Another city, Suvar, had similar features. Other cities, such as Juketau and Oshel, were smaller. In the northern part of Bulgaria, the population was sparse, and the fortresses of Kazan and Alabuga were small at that time and did not play a significant role in either economic or political life. The heyday of the Bulgar city dates back to the Golden Horde stage, to the end of XIII – beginning of XV centuries. The archaeological layer of the pre-Mongol period is rather weak and does not allow us to speak about the large population.
The participants of this event became acquainted with the emergence and development of cities of Volga Bulgaria in the form of an interactive tour. The children immersed themselves in the history of the ancient city of Bulgar and heard detailed information about the architectural monuments of the 13th-14th centuries on the territory of the Bolgar settlement.
15 people attended the event.
