On April 4, a researcher of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Krivosheyeva S.V. held for nine students of Bolgar sanatorium boarding school an interactive lesson “Ink with your own hands”.
It is difficult to meet a person who would not use ink and did not know what it is. But how many of us know the history of ink? The children learned the most ancient recipe of ink – it is soot with gum diluted with ordinary water. For easily washable inscriptions ink was made of soot and gum (cherry glue), and for strong inscriptions – of inked oak nuts with the same gum. The word “ink” comes from “encaustum” (scorched). It had various names in different countries.
The students were able to prepare medieval ink themselves, tried to write and even draw with it.
