On March 18, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramov D. P. held a lecture “The abolition of serfdom in Russia” for the students of Bolgar secondary school № 1.
The listeners learned that March 3 (February 19, old style) is a special memorable date in the calendar – the abolition of serfdom in Russia. The children learned about the reasons for the need to abolish serfdom and the creation of a secret committee on the peasant cause. The main result of the work of the committee was an open discussion of the project of abolition of serfdom. The committee was abolished on February 19, 1861, due to the completion of its mission and the implementation of the peasant reform. The peasants received new rights and freedoms.
The children knew how the reform took place in the country and what results it had. The theme of peasant unrest was also touched upon. The most famous were the uprisings in the village of Bezdna, Kazan province (Spassky district) and in the villages of Kandievka and Chernogai, Penza province.
23 schoolchildren attended the event.
