On January 17, 2025, for 13 students of Bolgar secondary school № 1 an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Rogachyova M.N. held an informational and entertaining event “Svyatki in Russia: from Christmas to Epiphany”. The aim was to familiarize children with the history of Christmas and Svyatki holidays, with the traditions of celebrating them in Russia, to familiarize children with the spiritual and cultural heritage of our country.
Christmas is one of the main Christian holidays and a public holiday in more than 100 countries of the world. It was established to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. After Christmas on the second day, the most cheerful and mysterious time began in many countries – Svyatki, holy days, which lasted from Christmas to Epiphany. Svyatki is a time of good deeds, congratulations, festivities, special rituals and fortune-telling. On Christmas Eve in Russia, they always helped the poor and sick, gave gifts.
During the event, the schoolchildren became acquainted with the history of holidays, learned about Svyatki, what words mean: “svyatki”, “Christmas Eve”, “carols”, about traditions and customs accompanying these holidays in Russia, and read poems about Christmas. Children guessed riddles, participated with interest in folk folklore – “carols” and took part in various games with great pleasure. At the end of the event, all participants received treats.
