On January 14, 2025, employees of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Glavnova V.N. and Rogachyova M.N. for nine schoolchildren of the 5th grade of Bolgar sanatorium boarding school held an informational and entertaining event “New Year’s miracles” dedicated to the holiday Old New Year.
Nowadays Old New Year is an unofficial but still a favorite holiday for many people. Unlike January 1, it is not marked in a big way, but it is a great time to visit your parents, spend the evening with your family or wish for something that you did not have time to wish yourself and your loved ones in the main New Year.
Like January 1, the holiday marks the beginning of a new year, and the prefix “old” is not accidental. This is a direct reference to the Julian calendar, which gave way to the modern chronology – Gregorian. Thus, the Old New Year is the one that comes on the old style.
During the event, the pupils became acquainted with the history of the holiday, watched with interest the video “Old New Year’s Eve”, found out in what other countries this holiday is celebrated. Children remembered about the main New Year symbols and fairy tale characters, guessed New Year riddles, played various games with pleasure: they chose dumplings with surprises, played snowballs, participated in the relay race “This Old New Year”. Everyone were given a treat for their participation, and the most active ones received small prizes.
