On 20 August 2024, a researcher Mukhametshin I.D. delivered a lecture ‘New Atlantis’ for the visitors of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve. At the lecture, the listeners became acquainted with the history of the old town of Spassk, which was flooded by the waters of the Kuibyshev Reservoir.
The town was founded in 1781, and until 1917, it was a centre of flour milling and served as a transshipment point for goods for neighboring counties. The town had the church of St. Trinity, almshouse, hospital, library, town bank, three schools, 19 water and windmills, 10 cereal mills and 1 tallow factory, 2 brick factories, up to 70 shops and warehouses, a bazaar on Sundays and a peasant fair in June.
In 1926-1935 the city, though on all maps was called Spassk, but for distinction from other cities with the same name was sometimes called Spassk-Tatarsky. In 1935, the town of Spassk became Kuibyshev and existed under this name from 1935 to 1957.
In the 1950s, due to the construction of the Kuibyshev reservoir and hydroelectric power station, the town was resettled from the flooded area. Resettlement began in 1953 and ended in 1957. New Kuibyshev was located in a picturesque area on the shore near the village of Bolgary, 120 kilometers from Kazan.
Eighteen people attended the lecture.
