Epigraphic monuments are an important source on the history and language of the Volga Bulgars. Researchers have recorded more than 400 Bulgar epitaphs of XIII-XIV centuries. A significant part of them is from the territory of the Bolgar settlement. In the Bolgar Museum-Reserve, visitors can see them in the Northern Mausoleum – a monument of architecture of XIV century and in the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization. Therefore, we observe and participate with interest in the activities related to the protection and restoration of epigraphic monuments. Several such monuments are located on the territory of the cemetery of Starye Salmany in the Alkeyevsky municipal district of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The initiators of the project are G.N. Salakhov, head of the Aksakal Council of Alkeyevsky district, and J.G. Mukhametshin, a researcher of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve. Thanks to the help of patrons, activists and not indifferent people, at the cemetery were carried out measures to preserve four gravestones (1292, 1317 and 1910). On one stone of XIV century, the text with the place of the date has been destroyed. The monument of 1292 is interesting because it mentions the name of the national holiday of the Tatar people ‘Sabantuy’.
R.A. Bilalov, Deputy Head of Alkeyevsky municipal district, and I.G. Salakhiev, Imam-Muhasib of the district, spoke at the event.
R.G. Nasyrov, J.G. Mukhametshin told about their work on research of monuments of Alkeyevsky district. Philanthropist Khairullin R.R., a resident of the village of Starye Salmany, was awarded a letter of thanks from the Bolgar Museum-Reserve.
The event ended with the celebration of ‘Village Day’ at the holy key, which was attended by a group of artists from Kazan, radio and television workers.
