On 15 August 2024, for 24 guests from the city of Saratov an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Rogachyova M.N. held an informative and cognitive event ‘In search of the past’, timed to coincide with the Day of the Archaeologist.
V.G. Tizengausen conducted the first scientific archaeological excavations at the settlement in 1864. Further scientific, protection and restoration works at the Bolgar settlement are connected with the Society of Archaeology, History and Ethnography at Kazan University. Since 1938, systematic work on the study of Bolgar was carried out under the leadership of A.P. Smirnov. In the 1950s, talented archaeologists A.M. Efimova, O.S. Hovanskaya, Z.A. Akchurina worked. The 1960-70s saw the active work of the outstanding historian, numismatist and archaeologist G.A. Fedorov-Davydov, historian and archaeologist R.G. Fakhrutdinov. T.A. Hlebnikova devoted more than 50 years of her life to Bolgar; since 1981, she headed the Bolgar Archaeological Expedition. In the 1970-80s, G.F. Polyakova and M.D. Poluboyarinova joined the work in Bolgar. In the 1980s-1990s, N.A. Kokorina, M.M. Kaveev, L.A. Belyaev, R.F. Sharifullin, A.M. Gubaidullin, V.S. The research is carried out by scientists from Kazan, Moscow and Crimea under the guidance of the Khalikov Institute of History and Archaeology. Thanks to the Revival Fund, a modern archaeological base has been created. As a result of the systematic study of the Bolgar ancient settlement, a lot of material has been obtained on various issues and topics of history and culture of the city of Bolgar. There is a huge number of publications, a number of monographs including a series of books ‘The City of Bolgar’. Large collections of finds and archives of reports have been collected.
The tourists visited the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization where they learned about the archaeologists and the results of their work. The guests were able to try themselves in the role of archaeologists: they tried to understand what the object was and how it was used in ancient times. At the Bolgar settlement, visitors saw architectural monuments of the 13th-14th centuries and preserved archaeological excavations, revealing the history of life of the ancient city. The guests were very impressed by the museum-reserve itself and the scale of revival of ancient Bolgar.
