On 20 May, all Volga regions in Russia celebrate the day of the great river – Volga Day. This holiday was officially established in 2008 in Nizhny Novgorod during the X Great Rivers Industrial Forum. The date was chosen 20 May, as on this day in 1998 the law “On Protection of the Volga” was adopted.
The Volga is one of the largest rivers not only in Russia but also in Europe. Its length is 3530 kilometers. The area of the basin is 1360 thousand square kilometers. Almost half of the country’s agricultural land and industrial enterprises are located in the Volga region. More than 60 million people live in the basin area. About 250 cubic kilometers of water flows down the Volga annually.
This holiday should draw the attention of the authorities and the public to the problem of preserving the river, which is not only the pride of the country, but also a valuable strategic natural resource. However, active activities on the Volga River lead to its pollution and shallowing. In honor of Volga Day, environmental events are held – cleaning the riverbanks, lectures, photo exhibitions, exhibitions of children’s drawings, etc.
On 22 May 2024, G.M. Musina, a researcher of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve, and E.V. Usyukevich, a teacher of the kindergarten “Rodnichok”, held a joint event on “Volga Day” for 16 children. During the walk along the historical embankment, children admired the beauty of the Volga, discussed the value and significance of the river for people and nature. They paid special attention to the problems of Volga pollution and ways to solve them. Children collected rubbish on the embankment, chatted with local fishermen and watched boats passing by. Kids were left with unforgettable impressions and gifts from the museum as a memento of this fascinating journey.
