On 21 May 2024, a researcher of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Musina G. M. for 18 schoolchildren from the city of Dimitrovgrad gave a lecture “The light of Islam” dedicated to the 1102nd anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgars.
On 21 May 922, the Volga Bulgars, ancestors of the Tatars, adopted Islam as the state religion. For centuries of history, Islam has played an important role in the spiritual life of the peoples of Russia. The adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria gave a powerful impetus to the socio-economic and cultural development of the region, gradually turning it into one of the most important spiritual centers. In the following centuries, Islam became one of the leading factors in the formation of universal values, ideas of humanism and tolerant interaction between different peoples on the territory of the Republic of Tatarstan and the entire Russian Federation. Today the republic has unique religious traditions that contribute to the preservation and development of the rich spiritual heritage, history, language and culture of our people.
During the lecture, children listened to the legend about the miraculous healing of the Bulgar Khan’s daughter, viewed the exposition of the Koran Museum, learnt about the arrival of the Baghdad embassy to the land of the Volga Bulgars and the transition to a new religion. In the end, the schoolchildren saw the largest printed Koran in the world, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
