On 17 May 2024, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Glavnova V.N. held an information and educational event on “Her Majesty Mother Volga” for 12 pupils of Bolgar School of Arts. The aim of the event was to expand students’ knowledge about the Volga River, its riches and environmental problems, as well as ways to solve these problems by the younger generation, to stimulate cognitive interest in studying the history of the Volga River, to expand students’ understanding of the use of the river’s waters for human needs.
Folk songs are sung about the Volga. It is called “Mother”, a national treasure; it is a frequent image on artists’ canvases, in literary works and films. It covers the whole central Russia. It gives life, shelter and food to all who live on its banks – people, birds, animals. As a sign of sincere respect for the river, a special holiday was established in 2008 on 20 May – Volga Day.
At the event, schoolchildren got an idea of the great Volga River, learnt about the major cities on its banks, peoples and their customs. The children learnt the names of great generals, singers, artists, musicians, poets, political figures associated with the Volga; they heard about the fabulous riches of the Volga basin and forest, abundance of fish, wild animals and birds, fat black soil, mineral resources and picturesque places. In order to draw attention to the problems related to the ecology of the region and the Volga River, a quiz was held, during which various questions were asked on the given topic and knowledge about the native land was tested. At the end of the event, the pupils listened to songs performed by famous singers about the Great Volga River.
