On 17 May 2024, an employee of the department “Museum Street” of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova L. Sh. held an interactive event on “Steamship Feldmarshal Suvorov” for the students of Bolgar secondary school No. 1.
The largest passenger steamer on the Volga River “Feldmarshal Suvorov” was built in Spassky Zaton in 1882. It was double-decked, 87 metres long, 25 metres wide and 4.3 metres high. The steamer could take 1138 passengers on board at the same time. 4 steam boilers made it the most powerful river vessel of that time. Narrow hull and shallow draft allowed “Feldmarshal Suvorov” to develop unprecedented speed. The steamer was built by “Caucasus and Mercury” company. Shipowners forbade the captain of the steamer to use full throttle to avoid breakdowns.
In 1892, the governor of Kazan urgently needed to go to Nizhny Novgorod, and he demanded from the captain to squeeze the maximum speed out of the steamer. According to the testimony, the stokers had hardly time to toss fuel. The chimneys got so hot that the wooden floor around them had to be poured with water. Along with smoke sparks flew from the chimneys. The steamer was shaking all over, and waves from it reached the shore, swamping barges and tugboats, throwing boats ashore. It took one day to reach Nizhny Novgorod.
At the event, the children saw separate details of the steamer, securities, shares, listened to the charter of the society “Caucasus and Mercury”, learnt a lot of interesting information about this steamer.
The event was attended by 16 people.
