On 16 May 2024, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramov D.P. delivered a lecture “Bolgar through the eyes of great artists” for 16 students of the 7th grade of Bolgar secondary school No.1.
The listeners of the lecture learnt that the ruins of the Bolgar settlement appeared on the canvases of many outstanding artists. Drawings and sketches of Bolgar architectural monuments at different times were made by Edward Turnerelli, brothers G.G. and N.G. Chernetsov, André Durand, A.K. Savrasov and I.I. Shishkin.
In the 19th century, St. Petersburg artists Chernetsov brothers made a unique expedition – they sailed from Rybinsk to Astrakhan “to draw from nature remarkable places on both banks of the Volga in a panoramic view”. For six months of the voyage, the painters made 1982 drawings, 80 sketches in oil and many plans and sketches of all kinds of Volga sights. The travelers also visited Bolgar, leaving their diary entries and drawings of ancient buildings – the Great and Small Minarets, the Eastern Mausoleum, the White and Black Chambers.
