On 18 April 2024, on the territory of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve for the pupils of the 9th grade of Bolgar boarding school for children with disabilities an employee of the museum-reserve M.N. Rogachyova held an event on “Architecture is a chronicle of the world” timed to the International Day of Monuments and Sites (World Heritage Day).
The International Day of Monuments and Sites is marked on 18 April. It was established in 1983 by the Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), established under the auspices of UNESCO, to draw public attention to the protection and preservation of the world’s cultural heritage. For the first time, at the intergovernmental level, the Day of Monuments and Sites was celebrated on 18 April 1984. World Heritage Day celebrations include conferences on the preservation and protection of cultural heritage and other events. On this day, visitors can visit architectural complexes and historical buildings that are closed to the public on normal days.
During the event, the schoolchildren walked around the Bolgar settlement, learnt about the history of the ancient city of Bolgar and unique architectural monuments of the 13th-14th centuries, heard ancient stories and legends. The children learnt about the decree of Peter the Great, which stated about the preservation of Bolgar antiquities. The pupils participated with pleasure in the proposed tasks on knowledge of architecture, tried themselves in the role of restorers – they assembled models of monuments from wooden fragments. At the end of the event, all the participants received maps of ancient Bolgar, by which the children will be able to learn more about the objects located on the territory of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve.
