On 21 February 2024, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirzyanova L.I. held an event on “My native language is my pride!” for 16 children attending the House of Children’s Creativity, timed to coincide with the International Mother Language Day.
On 17 November 1999, the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed this holiday. It began to be celebrated on 21 February 2000. The purpose of this date is to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
Today there are about 7 thousand languages in the world. Of these, more than 2.5 thousand languages are on the verge of extinction.
International Mother Language Day is primarily aimed at protecting languages that are disappearing. This is an important task, because every month two languages disappear in the world.
On International Mother Language Day, all languages are recognized as equal because each of them is unique. In Russia, one language is the state language – Russian.
During the event, the schoolchildren learnt the history of the holiday, the reasons for the disappearance of languages and the Red Book of Languages of the Peoples of Russia. Children also talked about their native language and Tatar writers.
