On 14 January 2024, the staff of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Glavnova V. N. and Rogachyova M. N. in Bolgar boarding school for children with disabilities for 18 schoolchildren of 5-6 grades held an information and entertainment event on “New Year’s miracles” dedicated to the holiday “Old New Year”. The aim of the event was to introduce children to the traditions and customs of celebrating the New Year, to familiarize them with folk folklore and games, and to foster respect for the cultural heritage of our country.
On the night of 14 January, in Russia and in some other countries of the world the “Old New Year” is celebrated – an unofficial but people’s favorite holiday, which got its name because of the transition to the so-called “new style”. The tradition of celebrating “Old New Year” is connected with the divergence of two calendars: Julian and Gregorian. There are many traditions and customs associated with the Old New Year. For example, in the Old Russian calendar this day was dedicated to Vasily the Great and was called Vasily’s Day.
During the event, the pupils learnt about the history of the holiday, traditions and customs, remembered the main New Year symbols and fairy tale characters. Children participated with great interest in various games, actively did winter exercises, solved riddles, took part in a mock auction and played a mobile game “Snowballs”.
