On 21 December 2023, an employee of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirzyanova L.I. held an interactive and entertaining event on “Folk amusements” for 11 students of the 3rd grade of Bolgar secondary school № 1.
Winter has long been a time of entertainment and amusement in Russia: all seasonal field work was completed and there was more free time, so young people invented various ways to have fun and please everyone else. In Russia, games were favorite at all times – they had truly mass character, differed by a huge variety. Games were girls’ and men’s, mobile and not, and everyone from small to great took part in them.
Games reflected the spirit of the people, its history and occupied an important place in people’s lives. They were not only entertainment, but contributed to the live communication of people and remained the main means of physical education, developing strength, agility, speed, marksmanship and other qualities. The very word “fun” in the Slavs carried not quite “entertaining” meaning, but a broader one: “mass event”.
During the event, the children learnt about the games played by our ancestors, about the importance and necessity of sports competitions for physical education.
At the end of the lesson, pupils took an active part in the quiz and made beautiful New Year cards.
