On March 31, 2023, an employee of Bolgar Museum-Reserve N. O. Ahundov for 23 tourists from Togliatti held an event on “Rzhev roads of war” dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the end of the Rzhev battle.
80 years ago, on March 31, 1943, the bloody Rzhev battle, which took place in the area of Rzhev-Vyazemsky ledge, 150-200 km from Moscow, ended with the victory of the Red Army. Rzhev was called the “gateway to Moscow”: it was here that the German army hoped to regain strength and go on the offensive again.
The Battle of Rzhev – the fighting that took place during the Great Patriotic War from January 8, 1942 to March 31, 1943. Under this name, they conditionally combine four offensive operations conducted by the Soviet troops of the Western and Kalinin fronts against the army group “Center” on Rzhevsko-Sychevsko-Vyazemsky direction.
Months of positional fighting, and then a painful offensive – to deter the enemy, not to allow the Nazis to turn back to Moscow and redeploy forces to the south, near Stalingrad, where the Wehrmacht will later break its back.
At the event, guests saw shots of Soviet newsreels filmed by war correspondents.
