On March 28, 2023, an exhibition “History of one exhibit. Bronze lock of XIII-XIV centuries” opened on the exhibition platform of the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization.
Cast locks of XIII-XIV centuries in the form of figures of horses or dogs were widely spread. They were made everywhere in Ulus Dzhuchi, and archeologists find them on the vast territory from the Volga region and Crimea to Central Asia and Egypt. Locks are a kind of “visiting card” of Bolgar craftsmen. Most likely, they were a remnant of pagan tradition, a reflection of ancient lore. Judging by their size, they served to lock the caskets or chests, at the same time serving as an amulet – a talisman protecting the contents of the casket.
The exhibition presents an item from the funds of Bolgar Museum-Reserve – a bronze lock in the form of a horse.
