On March 6, 2023, employees of the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization Zarifullina T. G., Kamayeva T. P. and Salnikova V. A. held an informative and educational event on “Kazan bypass – a heroic feat in the rear” for 21 pensioners of Spassky municipal district of RT. The purpose of the event was to familiarize participants with little-known pages of the Great Patriotic War, the construction of the Kazan bypass, the unprecedented feat of home front workers of our republic.
One of the heroic and tragic moments in the military history of the peoples of the Republic is still little-studied construction of a huge military engineering structure – the protective semicircle around Kazan – the Kazan bypass. It was a system of engineering fortifications and facilities established by the USSR State Defense Committee to protect Kazan from possible attack by the Nazi troops. It passed through the territory of the Chuvash and Tatar ASSR. The length of Kazan bypass was 331 kilometers including 151 km of anti-tank trenches, 79.61 km of escarpments, 1.96 km of counter-escarpments. There were 392 command and observation posts, 98 concealed firing points, 44 bunkers for 45-mm anti-tank guns and 12 – for 76-mm guns, 419 dugouts. The fortification was built mainly by the collective farmers, employees, workers, schoolchildren and students.
In people’s memory that time went down as the “years of trenches”. From the second half of October 1941 to February 1942, in severe weather conditions of the autumn rains and the 40-degree winter frosts, women, non-military men and youth completely by hand in a short time performed the government’s task.
The veterans watched a documentary film “Construction of Kazan defensive line – revealing pages of history”. After watching it, everyone took an active part in discussing the film, shared memories of their parents and friends – many of them were participants of those distant events. The leftmost extreme point of defenses of the Kazan bypass was the outskirts of the town of Kuibyshev in Kuibyshev district. During the construction of fortifications, several thousand civilians were sent from Kuibyshev district to Apastovsky and Kaibitsky districts. More than a thousand people sent to Kuibyshev from other districts of the republic lived here for the construction of the Kazan bypass. That is why the republic’s government made the historically correct decision to erect one of the monuments to the participants of the Kazan bypass construction in the territory of Spassky district. The monument was installed and opened in 2014 at the entrance to Bolgar – the center of Spassky district.
Guests took part in the opening of the exhibition “Spring mood”. All women, participants of the meeting, were congratulated on the upcoming spring holiday on March 8. They were wished good health, prosperity and active longevity. The event ended with a friendly tea party.
