On February 15, 2023, an employee of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova L. Sh. in the museum “Town on the river” held an interactive museum lesson “Journey to the steamship Field Marshal A. Suvorov” for the students of Bolgar cadet boarding school.
This largest passenger steamship on the Volga River was built in Spassky Zaton in 1882. Two-deck steamship was 87 m long, 25 m wide and 4.3 m high. The steamship could take on board 1138 passengers at a time. Four steam boilers made it the most powerful vessel of its time. A steam engine (it was ordered from England) put in motion the huge propeller wheels. The boilers and the hull of the steamship were built at the Spassky Zaton plant. The narrow hull and small draught allowed the “Field Marshal Suvorov” to develop an unprecedented speed at that time.
At the museum lesson, students learned who was the captain of this passenger ship, what difficult situations they had to endure and what celebrities sailed on this steamship. Children also learned about the Charter of the “Kavkaz and Mercury” society. Pupils were interested in details from the steam boiler and a ship bell from the shipyard.
The museum lesson was attended by 14 cadets.
