On February 10, 2023, a lecturer-guide of Bolgar Museum-Reserve D. O. Usmanova held an event on “Legends of ancient Bolgar” for 10 students of Bolgar children’s art school within the Year of National Cultures and Traditions in the Republic of Tatarstan.
During the event, children learned the history of the ancient city of Bolgar, got acquainted with architectural monuments and natural-historical objects by sketches and photographs. Kids were also told about the urban legends and stories that existed in the times of Volga Bulgaria. With particular interest, the students listened to the legend “About the origin of life on earth”. The legend said that it was a duck that pulled out the first piece of land from the bottom of the sea, from which the land was later formed, and the world appeared. The bird symbolized the heavens, the earth’s firmament and water depths.
At the end of the talk, children took an active part in a master class on making a “Rag duck”. Kids were happy to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of creativity. The works turned out bright and interesting. As a result, children learned to make handicrafts by their own hands, which can be used as an original holiday gift.
Making a rag duck at the master class brought the children not only a lot of positive emotions, but also aroused their interest in folk art.
