On January 12, 2023, an exhibition “At the threshold of Christmas” opened in the exhibition area of the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization. The students of Bolgar cadet boarding school named after P. A. Karpov attended the event.
The exhibition is devoted to one of the most important Christian holidays – Christmas and the history of creation of the most popular attribute of Christmas celebrations – vertep. Christmas is a wonderful time when the heart fills with anticipation of a miracle. It is a wonderful old tradition to put a nativity scene in your house at Christmas. Vertep is a model of the cave of Bethlehem with dolls inside.
At the exhibition, visitors saw a model of the cave and copies of Christmas postcards. Guests could move to Bethlehem, to the manger of the Infant Jesus. Vertep is made of different materials: from paper and cardboard to ceramics and wood.
Copies of greeting cards from the pre-revolutionary period and after the revolution in 1917 dedicated to the holiday complemented the exhibition. On the majority of pre-revolutionary Christmas cards, you can see biblical scenes or angels. Popular notions about the appearance of Jesus Christ were formed under the influence of Gospel stories, legends and traditions.
20 people attended the event.
