On 1 November 2022, a staff member of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova L. Sh. conducted an interactive museum lesson on Tatar national jewelry “Chulpy-nakosniki from grandmother’s box” for the children of Bolgar kindergarten “Antoshka”.
Even before people began to wear clothes, they began to decorate themselves with various objects. The most ancient ornaments were beautiful pebbles, precious stones.
One of the oldest forms of artistic creation is jewelry making. The art of jewelers originated in the East. The achievements of Tatar folk jewelry were especially vivid in jewelry connected with the national costume, mainly female. Tatar jewelry art reached its peak in the middle of the 19th century. The largest center of Tatar jewelry production was Kazan.
Among the ancient types of jewelry are chulpy-nakosniki, which were worn in the past by all women, starting from childhood. Tatar women braided their hair into two braids, into which they wove nakosniki. Simple nakosniki consisted of several large silver coins tied to a string. Coins of Turkish, Russian and Western European origin were used in the decorations, as well as carnelian, amethyst, amber and ornamental stones.
In this lesson, children learned how to weave “chulpy” into the braid, what metal was used to make jewelry, studied the names and meanings of stones. With great interest, they looked at the patterns and details of modern Tatar jewelry. The museum lesson was attended by 10 people.
