On 9 September 2022, a research associate of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Muhametshin I. D. held for the guests a lecture on “Bulgars in Europe”.
Bulgars appeared in Europe together with the tribes of Huns, picked up by the great migration of peoples. After the disappearance of Attila’s tribesmen, Bulgars became masters of the Pontic steppes. Already by the end of the 6th century, Bulgars appeared on the pages of the Byzantine chronicles again, after a certain break.
It is interesting that in the beginning of VII century Bulgars are mentioned in annals necessarily near to Avars as their subjects, and for the most part rebellious. So “The chronicle of Fredgar” informs on events of 631 in Avar Khaganate: “In this year the dispute in Pannonian kingdom of Avars or Huns has flared up. The subject of the dispute was the succession to the throne: whether it should be Avar or Bulgar. The armies of both sides came together, and a battle ensued. In the end, Avars defeated Bulgars (9 thousand people), and they were expelled from Pannonia, together with their wives and children”. Bulgars reached the blossom in the period of Great Bulgaria during board of khan Kubrat. But already after his death, the destinies of Bulgarian tribes were divided.
