On 8 July 2022, a staff member of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Ahundov N. O. held for the visitors an information lesson on “The legendary Poltava Battle” devoted to an important date – the Day of Military Honor in Russia, the day of Russia victory over Swedish in the Battle of Poltava.
Poltava Battle was the pitched battle of the Northern War between the Russian forces under the command of Peter I and the Swedish army of Charles XII. The general battle started at night with the attack of Swedes. The main victorious fight began at 9 o’clock in the morning. At first weapons were used, and then a hand-to-hand combat began. Peter I took part in the battles along with soldiers thereby encouraging them. Russians were ruthless, and Swedes did not only begin a retreat, they fled away to 11 a.m. The Battle of Poltava was a defeat for Swedes, and they sustained heavy losses. They lost more than 11 thousand soldiers. Russians lost about 1500 people on the battlefield.
So, a losing battle took the enemy’s powers that is why it was impossible to continue the advance. The king and Mazeppa ran away. The military strength of the Northern Empire was undermined. Russia secured the shores of the Baltic Sea and was ready to make peace but Sweden did not want to lose ground that is why the war continued. The powers of Sweden were mainly focused on a diplomatic solution of the conditions of peace, which were advantageous to both sides.
