On 12 April 2022, staff members of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Vagapov R. Z. and Ahundov N. O. within the all-Russian project “Pushkin’s card” held an interactive lesson on “A weapon of the warrior of Volga Bulgaria – the medieval longbow” for the students of Spassky College of sectoral technology.
A bow is the third greatest invention of humankind after a wheel and the technology of making fire. Archaeological finds indicate that the bow was invented by a man at least 10 000 years ago. This invention enabled humans to hunt more successfully birds and small animals that seriously affected the evolution of man himself. With the coming of civilization, weapon continued to develop, and in the middle Ages, the bow became a very effective weapon.
At the event, the participants became familiar with technical characteristics and device of two kinds of bows – a straight simple bow and a complex bow of Turkic type. Students could compare both types of bows and determine their main features and differences. During the lesson, boys and girls could refute for themselves many myths about the medieval bow, which are often used in modern cinematography.
