On 28 December 2021, staff members of the museum-educational department of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirzyanova L. I. and Bitunova Yu. A. held an event on “New Year’s customs and traditions” for the students of Bolgar comprehensive school №2.
Russia is rich in its traditions, customs and folk holidays. New Year is the most wonderful holiday in the world. In New Year, all people have fun, sing, dance and congratulate each other.
The traditions of celebrating New Year have their roots in the distant past. Originally, New Year was celebrated on 1 March, on 1 September in Russia. Later, when Peter I issued a decree in 1699, a decision was taken to celebrate New Year on 1 January. On 31 December around midnight, Peter I opened the holiday himself: he torched a rocket giving a signal to establish a new custom. Bells began to ring, cannons fired, and music sounded. The gates of houses were decorated with branches of pines, spruce trees and juniper. People wore new clothes and congratulated each other on the holiday. Folk festivities lasted seven days. At the main squares at nights, fire was burning in tar barrels. People lit fireworks, and houses smelled like resin and spruce branches.
During the event, children learned about the history of emergence of the holiday, about the traditions and customs of celebrating New Year in Russia and in other countries of the world. At the end, kids made nice arts and crafts and colorful greeting cards.
