On 9 December 2021, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Glavnova V. N. held a lecture on “Heroes of Fatherland” for the students of Bolgar special boarding school for children with limited opportunities. The lecture was devoted to the Day of Heroes of Fatherland.
This holiday is tribute to those who was awarded the most honorary state awards – the titles of Heroes of the Soviet Union, of the Russian Federation, orders of Glory and St. George.
The memorable date is devoted to the significant event that happened during the reign of Empress Catherine the Great – the establishment of the Order of Saint George the Victorious in 1769. At that time, officers and generals showing courage and audacity in fights were awarded this order. The Order of St. George had four degrees of distinction, and the first degree was the highest. Only four persons became the cavaliers of all four degrees, and Great Russian military commanders Mikhail Kutuzov and Mikhail Barclay de Tolly were among them.
After the revolution of 1917, the holiday was cancelled, and the order was abolished as a state award. Only in 2000, the order was reestablished by decree of the President of the Russian Federation.
During the lecture, schoolchildren became acquainted with the history of emergence of the holiday, knew about the heroic pages of the history of our Fatherland and heard the names of Russian heroes. Kids remembered proverbs and sayings about heroes and in the end, paid tribute to the memory of the dead.
