On 6 December 2021, staff members of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve held a video event on “Kaz omese” (a holiday of white feathers). This autumn calendar holiday goes deep into the past. Since long ago in late autumn, usually with the first freezing-over, the residents of Tatar villages held a collective processing of goose meat, feather and down. People made goose-down pillows and blankets. Brushes to grease pastry were made of goose wings.
Kaz omese is one of many traditional Tatar holidays, which needs to be preserved and passed on to future generations. Staff members of the “Museum Street” recreated a picture of this national holiday and reflected original elements of this unique action. Women in national costumes demonstrated the process of tying brushes from goose feathers for greasing pastry. At the end, there was a tea party with pancakes oiled with goose fat.
