On 12 November 2021, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Rogachyova M. N. held an interactive knowledge event on “Medicine of Volga Bulgaria” for the students of the 8th grades of Bolgar comprehensive school №2. The event took place in the museum “Healer’s house”.
Medical knowledge in Volga Bulgaria was based largely on the traditions of indigenous medicine. At that time, importance was attached to the healing properties of animal and vegetable products, minerals used frequently to cure diseases. In the exposition of the museum, there are medieval medical books and archaeological items connected with medicine of that time.
Schoolchildren had an interactive tour of the museum and became familiar with traditions of medieval medicine of Volga Bulgaria. They saw archaeological finds related to medical science, learned about their use and listened to interesting information about life of Bolgar healer.
During the event, some children themselves acted as famous medieval healers. They sought in the museum information on outstanding medieval scientists-medics and told about them. Kids also remembered proverbs about health and participated in a quiz actively answering the questions.
