On 20 October 2021, a research associate Muhametshin I. D. held a lecture on “Khazar kaganate” for the visitors of Bolgar Museum-Reserve.

Having conquered Alans, Bulgarians and other peoples of East Europe, khazars had wars with Byzantium. They captured Bosporus and East Crimea. Then, a new enemy appeared – Arabs. They conquered the Middle East and drove khazars from the countries of the Caucasus. In 735, they invaded the steppes of the Caspian Sea. The ruler of Khazaria left the cities of Belendzhir and Semender and founded a new capital in the barely accessible Volga delta. The city was named Itil.
In 740, one of Khazar military commanders – Bulan adopted Judaism. It seriously weakened the position of ruling class among the majority population but Bulgarians were under the rule of khazars up until the campaign of Svyatoslav.
In 965, Prince Svyatoslav defeated the army of Khazars, later – the cities of Itil and Semender. It was the end of independent Khazar state.
At the lecture, the audience became acquainted with significant moments of common history of Khazars and Bulgars, with interest knew about those people who consider themselves the descendants of Khazars.
