On 10 July 2021, a staff member of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Ahundov N. O. held for guests an information lesson on “The legendary Poltava battle” devoted to a significant date – a victory in the Battle of Poltava.
Poltava battle is a pitched battle of the Northern War between the Russian troops led by Peter I and the Swedish army of Charles XII. The general battle started at night with the attack of Swedes. The main victorious fight began at 9 a.m. At first weapon was used, then hand-to-hand combat started. Peter I participated in the battle along with soldiers, thereby encouraging them. Russians were merciless. A skillful fighting led to the fact that Swedes not just retreated but fled away by 11:00 a.m. Poltava battle was not only a defeat for Swedes but led to heavy losses – they lost more than 11 thousand soldiers. Russians lost around 1,500 people on the battlefield.
So, a losing battle took away the enemy’s powers that is why there was no possibility to continue the advance. The king together with Mazepa went on the run. Military power of the Northern Empire – Sweden – was undermined. Russia secured the shores of the Baltic Sea and was ready to make peace but Sweden did not want to lose ground that is why the war continued. All its forces were focused on a diplomatic solution to conditions of peace that were beneficial to both sides.
