On 30 April 2021, staff members of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirova L. A. and Gumerova G. T. held an interactive event on “Sabantuy is the feast of labor” for the students of the 5th grade of Bolgar comprehensive school №2.
Sabantuy comes from Turkic words “saban” – plow and “tuy” – holiday. It is an ancient ceremony of Turkic peoples. Traditionally, it was held before the beginning of planting season, and now it is a funny celebration of the end of planting activities. National songs and dances, funny contests and sporting events continue at sabantuy. This national activity is one of the most favorite holidays of children and adults.
Originally, the holiday was sacral. It was held in order to cajole spirits and deities of fertility. People believed they would bring good harvest. That was why Sabantuy was celebrated in April before planting activities.
At the event, kids became familiar with the history of emergence of the holiday, with its traditions and rituals. Children actively participated in various contests and games. All participants got a lot of positive emotions and received memorable gifts.
This holiday is under the protection of UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral heritage of humanity. It is a real precious stone of national unity and friendship.
