On 23 April 2021, a staff member of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Bitunova Yu. A. held an event on “A book is our friend” for the students of Bolgar comprehensive school №1.
World Day of Book and Copyright was proclaimed by the resolution at the 28th session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris in 1995. Since then, it is marked annually on 23 April. The decision was made with the aim to educate, to develop cultural traditions and because books are the most important tool for the promotion of knowledge and the safest way to preserve it.
Historical excavations and discoveries show that the history of creation of a book begins when the first people left information in the form of inscriptions on stones and cave walls. Names in different languages tell us about the origin of a book. The Latin word “liber” means “phloem” – tree bark used for writing. The English word “book” suited to “beech” – one of the names of a tree: in northern Europe, people used wooden boards to write on them. The Russian word “kniga” is related to the Turkic “kuinig” (scroll).
During the event, children listened attentively to the information, actively answered the questions of a quiz remembering stories, fairytales and their heroes.
