On 18 April 2021, a staff member of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Ahundov N. O. held for tourists a lecture on “Historical heritage” devoted to the International Day of Monuments and Historic Sites.
International Day of Monuments and Historic Sites (World Heritage Day) is marked on 18 April. It was established in 1983 by the Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) created by UNESCO in order to raise public awareness of issues on protection and preservation of World Cultural Heritage. For the first time, at the intergovernmental level, the Day of Monuments and Historic Sites was celebrated on 18 April 1984.
The issue of protecting historical heritage bothers people and governments since ancient times. In the Russian Empire, a useful innovation on preserving monuments belongs to the main reformer – Peter I. In 1722, he signed the first in history of the country Decree on protection of architectural monuments. The object of the decree was an ancient town of Bolgar – the capital of medieval Volga Bulgaria. Peter ordered to hold protective works and to make copies of monuments of Bolgar town for their further study. The decree served as an impetus for other activities on preserving cultural heritage. Due to that, numerous natural and architectural monuments survived to us.
During the lecture, the guests also knew various examples of different countries on the preservation of their cultural and historical monuments.
