On 15 April 2021, research associates of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Muhametshin D. G. and Muhametshin I. D. held a field lesson on “Along the streets of our town” for the participants of the club “The University of the Third Age”. The audience became acquainted with the pages of history of Bolgar.
The town called Spassk was formed in 1781. It was located on the bank of the Bezdna river 26 versts from modern Bolgar and 9 versts from Volga. In 1935, the town was renamed Kuibyshev in honor of a politician V. V. Kuibyshev. In 1953-1957 during flooding because of the creation of Kuibyshev reservoir, the town was moved to the present place. In 1991, it was renamed Bolgar in honor of the ancient town. Modern Bolgar is a small town where about 9 000 people live. There is not much left from the former Spassk but some interesting buildings connected with our history are preserved. The most beautiful temple is the church of Saint Abraham brought from the village Porfirovka.
There are many monuments in our town, and one of them meets us right at the entrance to Bolgar. It is the monument to the builders of a bypass of Kazan. Driving through the streets of our town, you can see old houses as if from the last century.
The central square of the town is a classic example of Soviet architecture. The monuments to V. I. Lenin and to heroes of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 decorate the square. It is our common historical memory valued by the townspeople.
The citizens’ most favorite place of rest is a lake of Rabiga the history of which is connected with ancient legends. Maybe, this deep lake was formed because of the meteor hit. The monument to a girl Rabiga is the decoration of this place.
You can drink clear spring water at the source of Abraham Bolgarsky. The well was named in honor of saint martyr Abraham Bolgarsky. According to legend, he was executed near the healing spring. In 2004–2007, the place of source was improved, and booths for ablution were equipped. A river port is situated very close where boats come. Here ended a walk around the town that recharged the participants of the club with vivacity and energy.
