On 17 December 2020, in the museum of Abdulla Alish a staff member of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova G. Y. held an interactive event on “As it used to be” – get-together on customs and traditions of Tatars. The activity was held together with the amateur group “Bolgar dawns” and the veteran’s club “Ak kalfak”.
A special form of recreation of Tatar youth was a home visit – “Aulak oi”. Aulak oi is a house, which was left for a while in care of a young girl. Her parents going on a visit trusted their daughter to keep order. An old woman-relative patronized the girl and looked after the house. Girls and boys came on “Aulak oi”. Their parents let them go with the condition that they would do any work (weaving lace, knitting socks, spinning yarn, spinning bast shoes or woodcarving). During the work, youth could break and have fun: they played games, sang songs, danced, played riddles. Everyone brought some sweets.
Such get-together was organized in the museum of Abdulla Alish with the purpose to revive national ceremonies and holidays and to preserve customs of Tatar people. The participants of the amateur group “Bolgar dawns” and veterans of the club “Ak kalfak” were the guests of this get-together. The museum conveys the atmosphere of an ancient Tatar room. There are old embroidered towels and carpets on the walls, woven mats and carpets on the floor. In the center of the room, there was a table with national dishes (kosh tele, ochpochmak, chak-chak, pies) and a samovar. Performers in national costumes sang old Tatar folk songs and limericks. All participants played old Tatar games with pleasure: “A ring” (“Yozek salysh”), “We were” (“Bez-bez idek”), “Tukmak”. The event ended with a holiday tea party.
