On 16 December 2020, staff members of the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization Zarifullina T. G., Kamayeva T. P. and Salnikova V. A. held an event on “Hello, winter!” for the students of the 2nd grades of Bolgar Comprehensive School №1.
At the event, children actively talked about winter omens, holidays and entertainments. They listened with interest to the story about the emergence of New Year holiday, about celebrating it in Russia and about its main characters – Grandfather Frost and Snow Maiden.
New Year was celebrated in ancient Russia in spring when nature was awakening from winter hibernation. Since XV century, people began to celebrate the holiday on 1 September after harvest. Only 300 years ago, the situation changed. In 1700, Tsar Peter I postponed the celebration to 1 January. He issued a decree, in which he commanded to celebrate New Year on the night of January 1. So with the light hand of Peter I, New Year became winter holiday. Since then, it is a tradition to decorate the Christmas tree in every home.
At the event, kids made New Year’s cards with the image of Grandfather Frost. They played funny games, actively participated in a quiz and received colorful medals and sweets. The activity ended with a tour of the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization and memorable photos.
