On 15 December 2020, a research associate of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramova G. K. held a lecture on “Tea is the soul of a family” for the students of the 2nd grade of Bolgar Comprehensive School №1.
Tea is one of the most ancient drinks in the world. Its usefulness and taste are incomparable to other drinks. This drink strengthens immune system and helps the body to fight diseases and daily stresses. For the first time, the idea of establishing the International Tea Day arose in 2004 at the World Public Forum in Mumbai (India). Then discussion continued at the meeting of the Centre for Education and Communication in Porto Alegre (Brazil). In 2005, it was decided to celebrate this holiday on 15 December.
A ritual of tea party entered Tatar life so much, that Tatar people say, “A tea table is the soul of a family”, thus underlining not only their love for tea as a drink but also its importance in the table ritual. It is the characteristic feature of Tatar cuisine, without which it would be impossible to imagine any holiday – wedding, matchmaking, sabantuy or childbirth.
The participants of the lecture learned about the origin of tea and knew how it got on the territory of Russia. Kids became acquainted with the peculiarities of Tatar tea party, with life of Tatars in the Volga Region and traditions of hospitability. Children listened attentively, asked questions and shared their family traditions and customs. At the end of the event, the students made postcards with images of samovars.
