On 10 December 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Salimova G. I. held an event on “The Khazar state”.
The history of Khazars is reflected in different written sources, and most of them is left by nations, which coexisted with Khazars and had a sustainable written tradition. The presentation of Khazar history is uneven. The sources of V-VI centuries know practically nothing about Khazars because they were in the shadow of more powerful nations.
Khazars initially did not manifest themselves while the Bulgarian association became a powerful political force but this flourish turned out to be short-lived. After the death of Kubrat, the Bulgar Horde was fragmented between his sons. Khazars took advantage of this, and as a result of the clash, in the 660s a part of Bulgars led by Asparuh Khan migrated to Dunai laying the groundwork for the rise of modern Bulgaria. The rest of Bulgars recognized the authority of Khazars. Apparently, after this event a ruler of Khazaria took the highest title of Kagan in nomadic hierarchy. By the end of VII century, Khazars controlled most of steppe Crimea, the Azov region and the North Caucasus. It is not clear how far their control of steppes to the east of the Volga extended. However, it is undeniable, that stopping the steady flow of nomads from Asia to Europe was the historical consequence of Khazar hegemony. It had positive implications for Eastern Slavic tribes and nations of Central Europe.
At the event, the guests became acquainted with the history of the Khazar Kaganate and knew about the main activities of its population.
