On 16 November 2020, the head of the exhibition complex “Memorial Sign” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Kabirova G. H. held a lecture on “Crafts of Volga Bulgaria” for the students of Bolgar special boarding school for children with limited opportunities.
In the economy of Volga Bulgaria of X-the beginning of XIII centuries, urban craft played a crucial role, and it became a separate industry. The production of Bulgar artisans was intended to meet not only domestic needs of the country, but the export as well. Written sources contain little direct information on Bulgar crafts. We can judge it on the basis of archaeological materials. The balances of production facilities found during the excavations of towns (metallurgical and pottery forges, blacksmith shops and others), numerous craft tools, production waste (iron, copper and glass slag), intermediate goods and different categories of handicrafts numbering in many hundreds and thousands of samples provide an opportunity to outline the level of development of the main industries of handicrafts. In all Bulgar settlements, especially in large cities studied archaeologically, there were found the traces of metallurgical (iron smelting), blacksmith, pottery, jewelry, bonecarve, wood-processing and other crafts.
During the meeting, students became acquainted with the main handicrafts, in which Bolgar people were engaged. The kids saw a presentation where there were some archaeological items found on the territory of Bolgar town.
