On 10 November 2020, a research associate of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramova G.K. held an information-knowledge video lesson on “The town of Bolgar, the town of scientists” devoted to the World Day for Science.
The World Day for Science dates from 1999. Under the auspices of UNESCO, in Budapest the World Science Conference took place. Its participants took the initiative to establish such an event, and in 2001, the proposal was institutionalized. The aim of the event is the establishment of dense connections in the research community, a coherent response to challenges facing humankind and joint problem-solving.
Science in the Islamic East developed on the basis of rich local traditions and achievements of other peoples. Cities of the Islamic East became scientific centers. Some sort of scientific academies created there, such as “House of Science” (“Dar al-ilm”), “Treasure trove of wisdom” (“Hizanat al-hikma”) in Bukhara, attracted scientists from different parts of Muslim world. Strong relations of Volga Bulgaria with these areas laid the ground for close ties in the field of science and culture. Bulgar scientists returning to their homeland after studies at the scientific and cultural centers of East wrote the works in the manner of their eastern teachers, made commentaries to their works and spread their scientific ideas in the home state. Versatile and encyclopedic knowledge of medieval eastern scientists was also common to scholars of Volga Bulgaria.
During the event, the guests of the site became familiar with the rich history of Volga Bulgaria and knew how writing, education and science developed. There was also talk about the development of literature and folk poetry in Volga Bulgaria. The best work of that period was a poem of Kol Gali “The tale of Yusuf”.
