On 29 October 2020, a staff member of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Gumerova G. T. held an event on “Great legacy of East. Avicenna” for the visitors of the museum “Healer’s house”.
His name is Abu Ali Hussein ibn Abdullah ibn Sina (980 – 1037) but in Europe, he is called Avicenna. He is among the people who left a bright trace in human history. He was a doctor, philosopher, mathematician, musician, poet and a great scientist who left his works in 29 fields of science.
Avicenna was born in 980 in a small village Afshana (Central Asia) near to Bukhara – the capital of the Samanid state. From an early age, he was characterized by incredible curiosity. During ten years, he attended regular Muslim school. Parallel to the school curriculum Avicenna studied additionally grammar, Arabic language and stylistics. When he was 10, he already knew the whole Koran by heart. He received his first education by learning theology. Later future scientist was interested in secular sciences – medicine, philosophy and mathematics. At the age of 20, Avicenna was already known as a scientist.
Undoubtedly, his services are primarily in the field of medicine. The main work of his life is a comprehensive encyclopedia “Canon of medical science” consisting of five books. Avicenna also developed a system of testing of medicaments by monitoring the sick and conducting experiments. He for the first time pointed to the existence of medication side effects and interaction of medications used simultaneously. The great doctor was the first who divided pleurisy and pneumonia, described a stomach ulcer and diabetes, identified the symptoms of meningitis, discovered the «true» muscles of eyes and proved the role of retina in visual perception.
Always demanding the best from his students as well as himself, Avicenna described how he saw a real doctor: kind, unselfish, honest, a man of few words, credible and sympathetic. “A doctor must have the eyes of a hawk, the hands of a lady, the wisdom of a snake and the heart of a lion”, he said being a living example of love to a person and of serving the ideals of science.
During the event, the guests also became familiar with archaeological finds presented in the exposition of the museum “Healer’s house”.
