On 21 October 2020, staff members of the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization Zarifullina T. G., Kamayeva T. P. and Salnikova V. A. held an information and knowledge event on “This day in the history of the Russian fleet…” devoted to the anniversary of the Battle of Navarino on 20 October 1827. The activity was held for the students of the 8th grade of Bolgar Comprehensive School №1.
The kids learned about one of the little-known pages of history of the Russian fleet. The Battle of Navarino is a unique event in the history of world wars at sea. The squadrons of five states participated in it. The combined fleet of England, France and Russia was on the one side and the united squadron of Turkey and Egypt – on the other side, while none of these countries was in a state of war. The battle ended with a glorious victory of allies and the almost total destruction of the Turco-Egyptian squadron. The losses of the Turco-Egyptian fleet were over 60 ships and several thousand dead and wounded. The allies lost no ships. Their losses were 600 to 800 persons dead and wounded. A flagship of the Russian fleet “Azov” led by the captain 1-st class M. P. Lazarev distinguished itself in the battle. Future Russian naval commanders, heroes of Sinope and Sevastopol defense of 1854—1855 Lieutenant P. S. Nahimov, Ensign V. A. Kornilov and Midshipman V. I. Istomin performed well.
The students watched with interest a video “The Battle of Navarino”, visited virtually the city of Pylos in Greece and actively participated in its discussion. They also saw the exhibition of unique nature masterpieces “Brazil agates” from the collection of the Natural History Museum of Tatarstan of “Kazan Kremlin” museum-reserve, visited the exhibit “The 100th anniversary of the formation of TASSR. The history of the state symbols” and the exhibition “Poets in uniform” devoted to Tatar poet and Hero of the Soviet Union Musa Jalil. The event ended with a tour of the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization and the museum of Abdulla Alish on Museum Street.
