On 15 October 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Ahundov N. O. held a knowledge lecture on “The towns of Volga Bulgaria” for the students of the 5th and 6th grades of the comprehensive school of the village Polyanki.
A medieval state Volga Bulgaria was famous for the abundance of towns: Bolgar, Suvar, Bilyar, Juketau, Alabuga, Bryahimov, Oshel and others. Khan Almush adopted Islam in the first capital – the town of Bolgar, which is the northernmost monument of medieval Muslim architecture in the world.
Bilyar was the second capital of Volga Bulgaria, “Great town” as Russian chronicles called it. Mongols destroyed this town in 1236.
Suvar was renowned for the development of crafts, trade with Iran, Khorezm, Byzantium, Rus, Georgia and the minting of coins. People were engaged in agriculture and cattle breeding. Eastern authors mentioned Suvar and Bolgar in their writings in 920s. According to Arabian geographer Abu Zaid al-Balhi, Suvar, which population reached 10 thousand, had “the main mosque”.
The students also became acquainted with many other ancient towns of Volga Bulgaria, expressed interest in the subject, asked questions and took some pictures to remember their visit.
