On 12 October 2020, in the Memorial sign in honor of adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgars in 922 a staff member of Bolgar Museum-Reserve G. H. Kabirova held an event on “Quranic motifs are woven of patterns” for the students of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school. Arabic calligraphy is an integral part of Islamic art. A smooth ligature developing into a whimsical pattern, ornament or a whole plot is a cultural heritage of Muslim civilization.
Arabic writing is the youngest of the alphabets used for the record of Semitic languages. It is generally accepted that independent Arabic alphabet emerged by the beginning of VI century on the territory of the northeastern region of Saudi Arabia. The codification of Quran allowed the Arabic language, which existed long before Islam, to flourish with lush fonts.
As an example of Arabic literature, Quran was at the source of the formation of Muslim aesthetics. The development of calligraphy and design art is connected with rewriting of Quran. Today culture of writing is an essential part of spiritual perfection of Muslims.
During the event, the students visited the Museum of Quran and became acquainted with the history of formation of Muslim manuscript tradition; saw the items telling about Arabic writing in the religious practice of Muslims and the largest printed Quran in the world.
