On 10 October 2020, a methodist of the museum and educational department of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova L. Sh. held an event on “Sombele – the holiday of autumn” for the students of grade 4 A of Bolgar Comprehensive School №1.
Sombele is a name of the month in the zodiac calendar, which Tatars used before Peter I introduced the Julian calendar. Sombele was associated with the image of a girl having golden locks. People left the first tied sheaf in the field devoting it to this image.
Because Sombele is a month of gathering the harvest, different dishes were prepared in every house. Bavyrsaks were necessary treats on the table, and they symbolized the family’s wealth.
Children became familiar with the history of celebrating Sombele and cycles of traditions held before the holiday and during the celebration. Every holiday is fun and games, and the students with pleasure participated in such games as “On the pea”, “Recognize me”, “What is in the basket?” and “Glorified apple”, posed riddles themselves and guessed them.
